“Love is a Dog … envelopes you completely and makes you want to listen again and again”
- Music Feeds
“Making for a strikingly assured album, the deep dives into heart-sleeved honesty equally matched by the cinematic stretches of detailed, string arrangements and brooding folk-pop features.”
- Rolling Stone
“[Emily’s] exquisite, brushed-velvet voice conjures a steady neck-hair waltz as her guitarist brother Jesse twangs in echoes and Alex Burkoy's violin makes like swirling leaves and memories”
– Love is a Dog ★★★★ The Age, Michael Dwyer
Critically acclaimed indie-folk darlings Tinpan Orange are one of Australia’s great brother-sister outfits. With the ethereal and mesmerising Emily Lubitz at the helm, joined by brother & guitarist Jesse Lubitz & violin virtuoso Alex Burkoy, Tinpan Orange’s heavily stylised folk music combines the highest levels of song-craft with an aching, sweeping romanticism.
Their fifth album ‘Love is a Dog’ with it’s razor-sharp melodies was most recently lauded “a strikingly assured album” by Rolling Stone Magazine.
Love Is A Dog is a complex, luscious offering from this seasoned trio. Opulent string arrangements, intricate guitar hooks and unforgettable vocal melodies from lead vocalist Emily Lubitz all dictate the dark, rambling nature of the record.
The album was recorded by the trio with the in-studio help of Daniel Farrugia (Angus & Julia Stone, Missy Higgins) on drums and Jules Pascoe (Clairy Browne & The Bangin’ Racketts) on bass guitar. The new LP was produced by the band in collaboration with Harry James Angus (The Cat Empire, Jackson Jackson) and mixed by the renowned Adam Selzer (M.Ward, She & Him, Jolie Holland) and recorded by Matthew Neighbour (Missy Higgins).
Four years ago Over the Sun (2012) saw the band win Triple J Unearthed with their catchy folk-pop single Barcelona. In 2013 Over the Sun was nominated for The Age Music Victoria Genre Award for Best Folk Roots Album. The band gained further mainstream attention after Emily’s voice was used on the famous Metro advertisement and one of the greatest viral sensations the world had seen, Dumb Ways to Die (2013).
Having shared the stage with Martha Wainright, The Cat Empire, The Waifs, Jen Cloher and Husky, as well as playing some of the world’s biggest music festivals nationally and abroad including WOMAD, Laneway Festival, Calgary Folk Festival and Winnipeg Folk Festival, Tinpan Orange’s music has grown them a fanbase that stretches across the globe.
